Beauty Maintenance At Home- Look Gorgeous While Saving Money!
Today’s post is about beauty maintenance that can be done at home. Self-care and beauty days are always a fun way to relax and de-stress! In contrast, please do not be mistaken- some things are best left to the professionals. Regardless, we’re sure many of us have become estheticians over the past year and more proficient in DIY beauty treatments. We have split the list of beauty treatments into face and body!
So let’s get into it!
Eyebrows are essential to your beauty and facial harmony. They act to frame your face and help portray emotions. Therefore, when working with your eyebrows at home, we caution you to take your time and be precise!
Eyebrow shaping grooms your eyebrows into a specific shape to fit your face. Here is a fantastic video on how to shape your eyebrows according to your facial features. All you need is some thread (or floss) and some bright eyeshadow. The eyebrows are then marked according to your nose, eyes, and arch. In addition, your eyebrows can be shaped according to your face shape. Of course, this is all just a recommendation- you can shape your eyebrows to whatever shape you love!
Eyebrow hair removal can also be done in a variety of ways. There is waxing (strips, hard wax, soft wax), threading, depilatory creams, tweezing, shaving, and sugaring. For beginners, we would recommend using depilatory creams curated for the face. This is easiest because you can apply it with a small brush increasing control of the application and is painless! If you are more experienced, waxing and threading are also classic options to give you long-lasting results.
Eyebrow tinting is a great way to add more drama, colour, and definition to your face. The eyebrows can be tinted with eyebrow dye, eyebrow gel, or henna. The application is quite easy when done on eyebrows that have already been shaped. A good rule of thumb is to use a dye colour that is similar to your eyebrow pencil shade. Here is a video about eyebrow tinting for $8! Be safe when doing this beauty treatment and check for skin irritation before completing the full procedure.
Hair removal on your face can be done in the same way as eyebrow hair removal (waxing [strips, hard wax, soft wax], threading, depilatory creams, tweezing, shaving, and sugaring). A very popular method has been shaving or derma planning, which essentially removes the hair and dead skin cells on the top of your face. This video explains the process in great detail! Proper before and aftercare are needed to ensure you avoid any irritation or rashes. Be sure your face and hands are clean, your tools are sanitized, and you take proper care of your skin afterwards (exfoliation, soothing lotions, SPF)!
At-home facials can also be done if necessary. In contrast, many estheticians recommend you do not do (difficult) extractions at home because of the lack of proper technique, tools, and sanitation necessary to do it well. On the other hand, you can definitely steam your face, oil cleanse, exfoliate, and masks.
Steaming your face can be done with a steamer, a hot towel, or a pot of hot water. You’ll want to put your face in the warm steam (not too hot) for around 15 minutes. You can also put a towel around your head and pot to increase the intensity of the steam.
Oil cleansing is also a great way to do a deep clean on your face. On a daily basis, 60 seconds is good enough but if you’re looking for something more intense, 10-30 minutes is great! Exfoliation can be done physically or chemically (recommended). This removes the dead skin cells on your face and brightens up your appearance. Masking is a great way to give your skin a proper cleanse and treatment. Clay masks (oily skin), sheet masks (all skin types), and gel masks (dry skin) are just a few examples of masks you can use.
Facial massages and gua sha are nice ways to define your facial features. This process acts to drain your lymph nodes and excess fluid, therefore, slimming down your face. The increased blood flow during the massage help repair the skin and slow down ageing.
Hair masks are an easy beauty treatment to improve the appearance of your hair at home! Unlike face masks, hair masks can be DIY or store-bought. Find out what your hair needs (moisture, thickness, growth, repair) and find a good mask to use! The two types of hair masks you should be incorporating into your regular routine include protein masks, moisturizing masks, and repair masks (for chemically treated hair).
Hair trims are something that can also be done at home with a great pair of scissors. We wouldn’t recommend doing dramatic hair cuts but you can trim your dead ends by yourself easily! This will give your hair a healthy appearance by removing split ends and damaged ends.
Styling your hair at home is something you can quickly learn as well. Brazilian blow-out, keratin treatments, curls, and straightening are things that can be easily mastered with a bit of time. Cornrows, braids, wig applications, and weave applications are also things that can be learned at home! Even if you cannot do these styles from scratch, learn how to maintain your hairstyles to keep you looking fresher for longer.
Exfoliating your lips is essential in keeping them soft and moisturized! You can use a simple sugar, honey, and olive oil mix to exfoliate your lips gently!
Lip masks are also a new thing to increase moisture levels! There are DIY options and also store-bought overnight treatments you can use.
Lip tinting is a very simple step to make your lips look sexy and kissable. There are simple 5-minute options to add some colour to your lips and instantly upgrade your appearance.
Whitening your teeth is very simple as a result of white strips! These are super simple and can serve as a big improvement to your appearance. There are whitening strips you can purchase for as low as $20. On the other hand, the only DIY teeth whitening we would recommend is oil pulling and baking soda (occasionally) with hydrogen peroxide. You can also purchase whitening toothpaste and mouthwash to maintain your results between your treatments.
Growing your eyelashes at home can be done with lash serum or castor oil. This is a great way to improve your natural appearance with ease!
As with facial hair removal, body hair removal can be done through waxing (strips, hard wax, soft wax), depilatory creams, shaving, and sugaring. Waxing and shaving are the most popular methods! Before removing any hair make sure your skin is clean and dry (and preferably exfoliated). Afterwards, treat your skin with some soothing lotions and
Masks are not only good for your face and hair but are great for your body as well! If you have hyperpigmentation issues, dryness, irritation, or acne, masks are a great way to treat your body.
Scrubs are amazing in improving the softness, glow, and brightness of your skin! You can use the classic DIY recipe (sugar, honey, and olive mix) or use Tree Hut’s or Dove’s great body scrubs. Italy/ Korean towels are also a good way to get a deep exfoliation on your skin as well.
Serums are also a fantastic way to improve your skin appearance- not only for the face. You can use serums with acid, retinol, and vitamin C! Paula’s Choice has a great selection that can help the softness, smoothness, and glow of your skin.
Moisturizing your skin is something you should be doing every day! Whether it be lotion or creams, daily application is great for the health of your skin. Don’t forget to use SPF in the daytime as well.
Oils are an essential step after moisturizing to lock in softness and improve texture. You can also give yourself a quick massage while applying the body oil to de-stress and relax. Oils that a great for your skin include rosehip oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and argan oil. These include great vitamins that work to repair your skin.
Tanning is able to be done on any skin tone and is a good way to make your body seem perfect. Self-tan can smooth out and blur any imperfections and a nice bronzing oil is a perfect touch for an event!
Manicures and pedicures are something that can be completed at home with a bit of equipment. You’ll need a nail file, nail clipper, cuticle cutter, cuticle pusher, cuticle oil, base coat, nail polish, topcoat, nail growth polish, and a nail brush. It is also great to soak your feet and use a foot peel or scrub when possible. Here is a great video on how to take care of your nails. The Russian manicure has become more popular as it focuses on the cuticle which is one of the crucial components in nail health.
If you love a more dramatic look with nail extensions, at-home nail extensions include press-on nails or poly gel nails. You can purchase a kit for around $30-$70 and they can also up to 3 weeks depending on the quality of your application. Here is a great video for poly gel nail application!
Beauty procedures to avoid at home: facial peels, strong acids, permanent eyelash extensions, eyelash tinting, eyebrow lamination, dramatic hair cuts, hair colouring, difficult extractions, micro-needling, and sun tanning.
